The teaching is direct: wars are begun and sustained through human enmity, and humans "take the first opportunity to wage wars" — but they also hold the power to decline the opportunity. The cause is a convergence of human-set choices: a war generating relentless demand for cheap, scalable killing; export-control regimes with porous resale markets that funnel Western microchips into Russia's weapons; and a weapons industry racing to automate the decision to kill. What is new is the threshold crossed — a strike in which the targeting, and arguably the lethal decision, was made by an algorithm rather than a person in the loop, enabled by the very microcomputers built for civilian machines now repurposed as the brains of autonomous munitions.

It is not fate; it is being decided.
