Physical Measurement and the Two Circle Constants¶
Two things the Goblet names separately¶
Measurement feasibility: how far apart the two candidates are in millimetres on a physical disc. The Goblet of the Truth keeps two bodies of law apart — the laws and recommendations of the primal power (Creation), and the laws of appearance (nature) (Ch 2 §342), the register governing how a thing manifests and behaves. Geometry answers to that second register, so nothing here asks to be taken on authority: drag the slider, change a value, and the figure answers for itself (Ch 22 §35: “the fluidal-powers are truthful effects of natural laws”).
The Goblet of the Truth does not speak of one undivided body of law. It consistently names two, and keeps them distinct:
- the laws and recommendations of the primal wellspring (Creation) — how a human being must live, think and act
- the laws of appearance (nature) — Gesetze der Erscheinung (Natur) — how things manifest and behave
"The laws of the primal power (Creation) and the natural laws let the clouds appear in the firmament and move from place to place…" — Goblet of the Truth, Chapter 2, Verse 99
"You are given the laws and recommendations of the Creation and the laws of appearance (nature)…" — Goblet of the Truth, Chapter 2, Verse 342
Geometry, number and measurement fall in the second class. The laws and recommendations contain no numeric criterion: a circle's circumference-to-diameter ratio cannot be derived from "you shall be truthful." So this page is not about the laws and recommendations. It is about what the laws of appearance permit us to claim, and Chapter 22, Verse 35 states that permission precisely:
"…you human beings must carefully study the creational laws and recommendations and their modes of functioning… and truly these explanations are not presumptions or deluded beliefs, but the fluidal-powers are truthful effects of natural laws." — Goblet of the Truth, Chapter 22, Verse 35
An observed effect, not a presumption. And Chapter 2, Verse 144 sets the test:
"…the real truth is the actual truth that is affirmed by the laws of the primal power (Creation) and natural laws…"
A physical measurement claim about the circle constant is therefore a claim inside the laws of appearance, and it stands or falls by what the apparatus can actually affirm.
What was actually done¶
The physical-measurement line associated with this site traces to one researcher's series, published at Measuring Pi Squaring Phi:
- a 1,000.0 mm diameter circle, marked with a beam compass and a straightedge
- cut on poster board / foam board, and in another run on hardwood, with an OLFA carbon-steel rotary circle cutter — in the researcher's own account, "a manual tool… later described as a $60 alternative to a $100,000 CNC machine"
- circumference taken with a Pi Tape laid into a cut groove around the disc
- a Pi Tape tolerance of ±0.4 mm, per the instrument specification cited in review
That is the record. It is worth stating plainly that the earlier description on this page — "three independent physical experiments over 7 years… CNC machining, laser measurement, and rolling tests" — overstated it, and the claim of "precision 1000× greater than the discrepancy" was never supported. Both are withdrawn here. The documented instrument was a hand-guided rotary cutter on board, and the series is one researcher's, not three independent laboratories'.
What the claim required¶
The two constants differ by 959.02 parts per million:
| value | |
|---|---|
| 4/√φ | 3.144605511029693 |
| π | 3.141592653589793 |
| relative difference | 0.0959 % (959.02 ppm) |
On the 1,000 mm disc:
- circumference under π = 3141.5927 mm
- circumference under 4/√φ = 3144.6055 mm
- difference = 3.0129 mm of circumference, equal to 0.4791 mm of radius
A claim of precision 1000× finer than the discrepancy therefore requires the disc's radius to be known to 0.48 µm and its circumference to 3.01 µm. The measured object's own error budget:
| source | magnitude |
|---|---|
| poster board thickness / fibrous cut edge | ~600 µm (the edge is this thick) |
| pencil or marking line, cut to one side of it | ~250 µm of radius |
| rotary blade kerf and offset from the mark | ~300 µm of radius |
| hand-guided cut roundness deviation | ~200 µm of radius |
| board humidity / thermal dimension change | ~100 µm of radius at 1 % RH |
The smallest real term is roughly 200× larger than the required precision; the largest, roughly 1250×. The demanded precision is below the granularity of the material itself. A fibrous board edge cannot be held to half a micron of radius over a 3.14-metre perimeter, and no uncertainty budget for that artifact can be honest at that level.
Why a Pi Tape cannot arbitrate¶
A Pi Tape is graduated in diameters: it reads D = C / π_tape. The division by π occurs inside the instrument before the number is read. Two circles with the same circumference — one whose true constant is π, one whose true constant is 4/√φ — produce the same tape reading. The tape cannot separate the hypotheses it is being used to test.
The same applies to the diameter itself. Per the NIST measurement handbook, roundness — and therefore "the diameter" of a real object — is defined by a least-squares fit of a trace to a circle, with high-precision work requiring 360 traces. The measurement returns a fit parameter, and the fit and its corrections decide the answer at exactly the parts-per-million level in dispute.
This is the conclusion the site's own posts already reach, from the mathematics:
"…a gap no measurement can be asked to arbitrate, because none of these numbers is measured at all." — The n-Dimensional Ball
"…physical measurement cannot tell them apart." — The Cycloid
"…dimensionless, scale-invariant ratios are precisely the quantities that physical measurement cannot resolve." — Buffon's Needle
What the record does and does not support¶
Not supported: any claim that physical measurement has confirmed 4/√φ = 3.144605511029693 at four decimal places, or with a thousandfold margin, or by three independent experiments. No laboratory-grade or independently replicated measurement at the required precision (0.48 µm of radius on a metre-scale disc) has been located. The one self-reported measurement series that publishes its scatter spans 3.143 – 3.145 — about ±318 ppm at three decimals — a spread comparable to the 959 ppm effect it is meant to separate, reported by its own authors rather than by an independent laboratory.
Supported, and unaffected by any of the above: 4/√φ is an exact algebraic number. It satisfies π⁴ + 16π² − 256 = 0, lies in the degree-4 field ℚ(√φ) (minimal polynomial x⁴ − x² − 1 = 0), and is constructible as a tower of two square roots. Every construction result on this site — the Kepler triangle closure, the equal-perimeter square-and-circle, the instrumentum identity, γ = φ at β = 1/√φ — is exact and remains exact. This page withdraws a measurement claim; it withdraws nothing from the constructed world.
The honest shape of the position, then, is the one the site's analytic posts already state: the constructed constant and the analytic constant are both exact, both computed, and no apparatus arbitrates between them, because every apparatus available is graduated in terms of one of the two labels already.
A note on attribution¶
Two corrections to the surrounding record, made for accuracy:
- The physical work is a single researcher's series, executed with hand tools on board, plus a FIGU official's document. It is not three independent experimental programmes.
- Samuel Laboy Alvarado's pyramid geometry does not use 4/√φ. His published work employs π = 3.1415926…, the standard value, and his Perfect Symbol is a proportional construction derived from a circle's radius. Attributing golden π to him is not supported by his own texts.
The standard this page is held to¶
"Build the foundation walls of your knowledge on the real truth of the principles and recommendations of the primal power (Creation) as well as on the natural laws…" — Goblet of the Truth, Chapter 2, Verse 182
"However, remaining in the unknowledge and disregarding the signs (wonderful things) of the appearance (nature) and both its and the formation-given (Creation-given) and natural laws and imputing them as a lie amounts to self-punishment…" — Goblet of the Truth, Chapter 2, Verse 79
That warning is not selective. A claim about what a physical circle measures is a claim inside the laws of appearance, and it is answerable to them. The claim previously carried on this page was not answerable to them, so it is withdrawn — not because the construction is wrong, but because the measurement was never capable of affirming it.
The exact status of the two constants is stated in full on True Value of Pi and The Kepler Circle–Square Closure.
